DIY Napkin Rings: Rose ribbon napkin ring with pink tassel

I’ve been wanting to try this DIY napkin rings project for a long time. It was only recently that I got around to doing it. This project is a great way to upcycle paper towel and toilet paper rolls. You can do this project to create napkin rings for a dinner party or a birthday celebration.

DIY Napkin Rings: Use Supplies You Have on Hand

The supplies for this DIY are so simple that you probably already have many of them on hand! Grab your paper towel and toilet paper rolls, some ribbon, and some hot glue. Afterward, pick out any embellishments you want to use to decorate them.

For my embellishments, I used flowers, tassels, and some dragonfly cutouts from Hobby Lobby. They are so easy to customize! You can certainly come up with plenty of your own ideas for how to decorate them.

Supplies for DIY napkin rings

Supplies

  • Paper towel or Toilet Paper Rolls
  • Razor blade or X-ACTO knife
  • Scissors
  • Wire cutters (if using faux flowers)
  • Ribbon (I would use at least 1-inch wide ribbon)
  • Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
  • Embellishments (flowers, tassels, cutouts, and more)

Directions

Slit in paper towel tube

You need to cut your paper towel rolls into rings the same size as your ribbon. I did this by holding the ribbon up on the rolls and using the razor blade to make a small slit in the roll. Afterward, I went in with the scissors and finishing cutting out the ring.

Cut your ribbon to a length that will wrap around the tube, allowing about a half inch to fold the end under. For me, this came out to about 6.75 inches.

Ironing a fold into a green ribbon

Using an iron, fold the end of your ribbon under (about a half inch) and iron a crease into the ribbon.

Heat up your hot glue gun. I used my Gorilla glue gun because that’s what I always use, but a standard glue gun will work just fine.

First, you need to hot glue the fold of your ribbon down. This will help it stay in place better and create a smoother finish.

Gluing ribbon to a paper towel tube

Take your cut out ring and put a line of hot glue on it, as pictured. Press the end of the ribbon into the hot glue and hold in place for a few seconds to allow it to dry.

Hot gluing a ribbon to a paper towel tube

On the opposite side of your paper towel roll, add one more line of glue and press the ribbon down into it, keeping it tight around the roll.

At last, wrap the ribbon all the way around, and glue the folded portion seam side down into the roll. Hold down for a few seconds and smooth into place.

To add your embellishment onto the roll, place a line of hot glue over the seam side of your finished roll and press that embellishment into it.

If you are doing a tassel, glue the tassel to the inside of the smooth side of the roll. The seam should be facing down.

When using a flower, you may need to cut the stem off of the flower using wire cutters. When I did this, my flower came apart, and I had to hot glue the layers back together before attaching it to the napkin ring.

Create as many of these napkin rings as you need for your party or dinner.
