Lately, my husband and I have been thinking more about our health. We want to eat clean, unprocessed foods with less sugar and more health benefits. To help reach our goals, we have had to make some changes to our diet. We have come up with some healthy snack swaps so that we can treat ourselves when we are in the mood for a special snack.
These healthy snack swaps are not necessarily low calorie, though some of them are. You’ll still need to exercise restraint in the quantity that you indulge in. But hopefully, these swaps give you some good ideas to aid you in your health journey.
I love a good prebiotic soda. They are healthier, have less sugar, and are lower calorie than a standard soda. In my opinion, they also taste much better than diet soda or seltzer. Popular brands include Olipop and Poppi, but I also enjoy Wonder Pop, the Wegmans store brand. My favorite flavors are cream soda, root beer, and Olipop’s Dr. Goodwin.
My husband and I recently tried the viral trend of making chocolate covered dates. They did not disappoint! This was a delicious and satisfying treat, and much healthier than a chocolate bar with caramel or nougat. Try our butterscotch chocolate covered dates for a sweet treat.
I love the 100-calorie bags for popcorn. You get a very satisfying amount of popcorn to munch on for a small amount of calories. If you need a healthy and filling snack, try this out in lieu of regular popcorn.
Instead of going out for an ice cream cone, try going out to a frozen yogurt shop. I always get 4 ounces of the vegan chocolate frozen yogurt at Kiwi Yogurt. It is 25 calories an ounce, which brings it to 100 calories for my sweet treat. That’s much better than an ice cream cone!
I love roasted chickpeas for a healthy and crunchy snack. Try making barbeque roasted chickpeas for a yummy replacement for BBQ chips! Or browse Pinterest recipes for other ideas for seasonings.
Milk chocolate has more sugar and fat and less antioxidants than dark chocolate. Treat yourself to a small dark chocolate bar instead of a regular candy bar for a treat that brings benefits.
Instead of spreading mayo on your sandwich, which often brings unhealthy ingredients, try swapping for hummus. Hummus is healthy and comes in a variety of flavors to choose from. I love doing this when I’m making a turkey sandwich.
Instead of loading your tortilla chips with cheese, try salsa. Even better, try fresh pico de gallo. Salsa and pico are low calorie and have healthier ingredients. In my opinion, they taste even better than cheese dip.
Flavored and sweetened lattes bring lots of calories and sugar. Oat milk has lots of flavor and a touch of sweetness that I feel makes for a great, simple latte. I always order an unsweetened oat milk latte when I buy coffee. The oat milk is thick and brings subtle flavor to the beverage without erasing the taste of the espresso.
Start making your granola bars at home for full control of the ingredients! Store bought bars are loaded with sugars and unhealthy oils. I use this granola bar recipe, and I add two tablespoons of chia seeds and two tablespoons of ground flax seed.
Some of these snacks are low-calorie, but some are simply healthier choices for you to make. If you’re trying to eat at a calorie deficit, try these low calorie snack options that are under 100 calories each.
