How to Create a Plate Wall: Collecting the Plates

Beautiful plates are easy to collect, as you can acquire them thrift stores, yard sales, and estate sales for a low price, depending on the pattern. Above all, I like to collect Blue Willow plates. I also enjoy collecting any unique and colorful plates that catch my eye. You can opt for plates all in a similar color family, all of the same pattern, or you can mix and match for a more eclectic look.

Laying Out the Wall

With my first attempt at a gallery wall, I started by laying everything out on the floor and then I eyeballed it. On my second attempt, which was a Blue Willow gallery wall that still hangs above my kitchen cabinets, I was much more methodical.

Here are a few steps I recommend following when you’re trying to get your layout right.

  • Step 1: Lay out your plates on the floor to determine your pattern
  • Step 2: Cut out circles in the size of your plates
  • Step 3: Attach your plate hardware to the plates, and mark on your paper where the nail will need to be based on the hardware you select
  • Step 3: Mimic the layout of the plates on the floor onto your wall, but use tape to attach the circles to the wall.
  • Step 4: Hang your plates using plate hardware

Selecting Hardware

There are multiple types of hardware you can use. My personal favorite are the wire holders that can be hooked around your plate. You can find the exact plates holders that I used on Amazon. Additionally, there are pieces of hardware that can be attached to the back of your plate with adhesive. You can find these adhesive plate holders on Amazon.

The End Result: A Beautiful Plate Wall

The result of your hard work is a stunning plate collage that will be stylish for years to come! I hope you enjoyed the process of curating all of the pieces and then learning how to create a plate wall.
