Thrift shopping is an affordable, sustainable way to build your wardrobe. I love that you don’t have to worry about which brands are sustainable or not – because everything you are thrifting already exists and your purchase isn’t leading to any new production of clothes. If you are interested in thrifted fashion, this blog post will explore how to wear thrifted clothes and how to create a wardrobe with them.
I’ve been thrifting clothes for years, and have lots of experience with it. I’ve saved countless dollars by building my closet this way, and I want to share my tips with you! Follow along as we explore where to shop and how to style your finds.
You can shop for thrifted or vintage clothing in brick and mortar stores and online. Here are some of my favorite spots!
The most obvious place to shop for clothes is your local thrift stores. Around me are chain stores like Goodwill, 2nd Avenue Thrift, and Liberty Thrift. There are also many smaller thrift and clothing consignment shops. Do a local Google search to discover shops near you! If you want to hit them all up in a day, you can map out your route in advance and bring lots of disposable shopping bags with you!
It’s a little more expensive that the thrift store, but the benefit of buying online is that you have a great selection to choose from. You also can search for specific brands or styles that you know you like. There have been times where I loved a particular style of clothing so much that I wore it out. I’ve been able to find these items again on Poshmark. I’ve never ordered from ThredUp but I’ve heard great things about them. You can also look at Etsy, eBay, and other sites.
When shopping for thrifted clothes, there are a few important things to keep in mind. These tips will help you have a successful shopping trip!
With thrift shopping, you never know what you’re going to find or where you’ll find it. I tend to browse all aisles when searching for clothing – even those that are not my size. Sometimes you’ll find misplaced sizes in the wrong section, and sometimes vintage clothing sizes don’t run the same as newer ones.
The unique thing about thrift shopping is that you find a mixture of more current, on trend clothing and vintage pieces. Don’t turn up your nose at items that are vintage. You can mix and match them with trendier pieces to create a unique look!
A great way to stay on track with your clothes shopping is to first browse Pinterest and create a board of outfits you find inspiring. When you are shopping, you may spot pieces that would work for those outfits, and it will help you stay focused and buy things you’ll actually wear.
Once you acquire your new thrifted wardrobe, you’ll want to find some stylish and unique ways to wear your finds. Here are some tips!
If you find vintage clothing that doesn’t quite fit you, don’t be afraid to get it tailored. The amount you are saving by buying thrifted clothes can often justify the expense of tailoring. Just be sure that the piece is a high-quality piece and a classic style worth investing in. You’ll want it to be something you can wear for years to come!
I love watching people’s thrift haul videos on YouTube. Seeing the clothes that other people gravitate toward and how they style them really inspires me when it comes to my own wardrobe. In particular, the YouTuber Katia Nikolajew really inspires me with her over the top bohemian style. It’s not something I mimic exactly for myself, but seeing her unique ideas helps me be more creative.
Fashion show, fashion show, fashion show at lunch! I don’t have as much time for it these days, but it’s fun to try on items from my closet and style them different ways. It helps me to get my creative juices flowing and it gives me new outfit ideas for later on when I have to pick out an outfit quickly. Whenever I get a new haul from the thrift store, I try to style the items right away to get some ideas.
