Mackenzie Wambach is a 27-year-old wife and mama of two precious children – a 3-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl. As a pre-nursing student and a working home health aide, she balances school, work, and caring for her children.
Mackenzie loves her job because of the flexibility she has with her schedule. She gets to create her own schedule, which helps her to give her all in each area of her life. She returned to school after having her second child, which started out as virtual classes but transitioned to in-person classes.
I had the chance to chat with her and find out how she keeps up with all of the different aspects of her life.
[My daughter] Kenni’s new routine has been getting up at like 5:30 or 6am. So we’re up early, and then they have breakfast and a snack – and sometimes they want more breakfast. Then they just play [for a while] and then sometimes we’ll do errands. I do a lot of pick-up orders. I like go to Target or Whole Foods for a pickup order, because I think it’s [easier than getting] the kids out of the car. Then we’ll come back and we’ll try to do “rest time” so that I can have a break. While I’m in classes, that’s when I can get work done. They used to take naps, but we have gone away from that, so it’s their rest time for an hour and a half. After that, we try to go outside or do something fun. Then we do dinner and bath, and they’re in bed by 7:30pm. If I do have work that day, [my husband] John gets home around 4pm, and then I’ll go into work.
I do wish I could work more. It’s just [challenging] trying to [take care of] the kids and not be overstimulated by all of it. You have to find the balance. Until they’re in school, I can’t work as much as I’d like, so this is what works for us.
I get to make my own schedule, and I do have different clients from time to time. I get to interact with different people, and it’s always something different. Each person’s needs are different. It’s always an adventure!
[I would say] to definitely make time for yourself. You have to prioritize that time and [time spent] getting stuff done, so I have to rely on John to help me navigate that with the kids. Sometimes I can even get some school work done at work, which is nice. It’s definitely [important to] prioritize [time for yourself].
I think like being a mom kind of helps [me with my job]. The two go hand in hand, because [they both involve] caring for people.
I definitely think a lot about patience. That’s [important] because I get overstimulated a lot. That’s something I constantly am in prayer about – patience. You need patience with that job and with the kids.
Because of the agency I’m with right now, I can pick in my hours. This is actually really nice because not all places are like that. [Some places, you are required to work holidays, which is] really hard with kids.
