If you’ve seen my home, then you know I’m a “more is more” girlie. I have fully embraced maximalism, and I love to fill every nook and cranny with trinkets and décor. My maximalist living room is a prime example of my design style. There is no shortage of color, pattern, and texture in this room!
Perhaps you’re wondering how to pull off a maximalist living room. If you want to get this look for yourself, I’ve broken it down into some basic principles that are easy to follow. Try implementing these tips for your own stunning results!

Don’t shy away from color if you’re looking to achieve a maximalist aesthetic. You can start with one accent color mixed with neutrals, or you can go ham and fill the room with color! My color scheme features different shades of blue and pink, with a few pops of yellow. My colorful rug ties all of these shades together!
If you want to go for a colorful look, try finding one key piece that contains many colors, like a rug, accent pillows, or curtains. You can then match all your other pieces to that color scheme. Just make sure to disperse the colors evenly throughout the room. You don’t want there to be big clusters of one specific color in one spot!
I love pattern when it comes to maximalist design! I have pattern on my rug and on my throw pillows. There is also a subtle striped pattern on my curtains. You can totally mix different patterns together, but do it with care! I love mixing a busy pattern (like the pillows) with a more simple pattern, like the stripes. However, I have seen others pull off some rather busy pattern mixes, and it can look beautiful!

Texture takes less skill to mix together than color and pattern. This is because texture doesn’t clash! Give special consideration to the texture of the items you add to your room. If everything is the same, that can be boring. Mix unique fabrics and textiles like silk, woven blankets, and corduroy with wood, metal, porcelain, pottery, and more.

For me, the best part of maximalist decor is accessorizing. Accessories are truly the jewelry of the room! Most of mine were acquired affordably at local thrift stores. If you’re a collector, maximalist decor can really make your collection shine! I collect Blue Willow, pink depression glass, milk glass, and others.
When displaying your accessories, try to pair them together in uneven numbers for a more pleasing look. Clusters of three or even five are usually optimal! There’s just something less visually appealing about even numbers.
Clutter can take maximalism into hoarder territory! If you decorate in this style, be sure to organize well and keep your home free of clutter. Everything should have a place to land! It’s also important to keep those items dust-free.

Statement pieces in your home give the eye a place to settle. This could be an art piece on the wall, a stunning buffet table, a china cabinet, or a gorgeous centerpiece on your coffee table. Think about ways to add a focal point to your living room for maximum impact!

A gallery wall could actually be a great focal point! My favorite way to do it is to incorporate an assortment of different frames in various sizes and finishes. This creates an eclectic vibe that is more in line with a maximalist living room. However, you could use matching frames for a more polished look. Here are some great tips for creating a gallery wall.

Greenery adds so much life to a room! Houseplants often have added benefits such as purifying the air. I love orchids for extra drama and pothos for something easy to care for. You can also arrange fresh flowers or use faux florals for easy upkeep. Place your greenery in gorgeous thrifted pots for a stunning look!

Wallpaper fits right into a maximalist living room! It adds so much dimension and interest to a room. You can opt for simple peel and stick wallpaper for a temporary finish, or a regular wallpaper with glue for a more permanent one. There are so many patterns and colors to choose from! You could even do a wallpaper statement wall to save money and effort.
The best maximalist decor is a blend of both vintage and modern. My living room combines a brand new modern couch and a modern color scheme with vintage accessories and furniture. I love the look of vintage accessories with a modern color palette or vintage furniture in modern finishes.

I absolutely love scoring vintage lamps at the thrift store. I usually replace the shades with something clean and modern for a fresh look! My living room has been through many iterations over the years and has used French figurine lamps, a gorgeous blue and white lamp, and now a simple vintage lamp in a pretty shape. I love lamps rather than harsh overhead lighting for a cozy vibe.
I hope these tips help you to create your own little haven of a maximalist living room. I’d love to see how you decorate your homes! Tag @LaurenMagazine on Instagram to show me your decor!
