Vintage Desk Makeover: Restoring a Classic Piece of Furniture

By , December 31, 2024

I scored this vintage desk for free when I was living in Eagleville, Pennsylvania. It lived in my Eagleville apartment, in my parent’s house when I moved back for a few months, and then in the house I bought with my husband. It was the perfect candidate for a vintage desk makeover!

I always planned to give it a spruce up, but never got around to it. Despite it not being in the best condition, I loved this piece! I used it as a vanity rather than a desk. When my mom gifted me a vanity that once belonged to my grandmother, this piece no longer had a place in my home. I decided to give it a makeover and gift it to my mom for Christmas.

Vintage Desk Makeover: Painting & Staining

I wanted to preserve the look of the wood, but some of the drawers had chipped veneer. I opted to repair the chipped veneer with Bondo and painted the base of the desk in Whisper White Cabinet & Trim Enamel by Behr. I sanded all of the stain off of the top surface and then re-stained it in Carrington by Varathane. Due to the red tones in the wood, this came out looking a bit red, which I didn’t mind.

Cleaning the Hardware

When I cleaned the hardware, I was in for a bit of a surprise. I was expecting brass hardware, due to the appearance of it. But I found out that the original color was actually silver! These cleaned up so nicely! I used the vinegar and baking soda method on these.

Vintage Desk Makeover: The Finished Product

The final piece turned out so beautiful, and my mom was proud to display this in her foyer under the stairwell. She uses this for its original purpose as a desk. I love the way it turned out!
