How to Decorate with Antiques at Home: Sourcing & Decorating

By , January 20, 2025

If you’ve seen my living room home tour, you know that I’m a lover of antique and vintage décor. Most of my home is filled with antique or vintage furniture and knick knacks. In fact, there is significantly more décor that is thrifted than there is new. I learned how to decorate with antiques at home through years of trial and error. My early attempts are fun to look back on, but in my current home I really feel that I’ve found my style.

If you are wondering how to decorate with antiques at home, you are in luck! This blog post serves as a guide for how to curate a collection of stunning antique and vintage finds, as well as how to beautifully display them. I hope you enjoy following along!

How to Decorate with Antiques at Home: Sourcing Antique & Vintage Décor

Where can you find gorgeous antiques for your home? The sources are numerous!

Thrift Stores

My favorite place to shop is definitely the thrift store. You can find some many great pieces, but you may have to do some digging to score gems. When I’m on the hunt for a new piece, I’ll check out my local thrift stores several times a week to make sure that I don’t miss anything. Some thrift stores are pricier than others. I’ve found that the chain stores like Goodwill and others tend to price higher than local, mom and pop thrift stores.

Antique Stores

Antique stores are a great way to browser a curated collection of antique finds. Prices are higher, but the selection is definitely nicer than it would be at a thrift store. If you love antique finds, be sure to scour your local antique shops to see what they have in stock.

Yard Sales

The cheapest way to acquire antique or vintage pieces is yard sales. They always have the best prices, but the selection is limited. Again, you may have to do some hunting and you may want to find local townwide yard sales so you can hit up a few in a day. Sites like Facebook Marketplace may be a good way to discover yard sales near you.

Estate Sales

I don’t have as much experience with Estate Sales, but they are a great way to get a good deal on an antique. You may even be able to haggle the price down, especially if you are purchasing multiple items. Use sites like EstateSales.net to discover sales local to you.

Online Shops

For the absolute biggest selection, you can find great antique and vintage finds online. Check out Etsy, eBay, or Mercari. You can also find auction sites selling specific items you are looking for by browsing for that item in a search engine.

How to Decorate with Antiques at Home: Displaying Your Collection

Once you’ve accumulated some great antique décor, you’ll want to display it proudly in your home. Here are some tips for displaying those gorgeous finds.

Group Like Items to Showcase Your Collections

If you collect a lot of a specific item, display them together! Showcasing your collection (or collections) is a classic way to decorate your home and it’s very impressive. It adds interest and gives visitors something special to look at! Plus, it will help you be aware of just how many of that item you actually have!

Safely Display Your Fragile Items

If you have something valuable and breakable, you’ll want to make sure that it’s displayed safely. China cabinets are a great place to stash fragile items, especially if you have children. If you display things on shelves, you may want to try earthquake putty to stabilize them, especially if you live somewhere prone to earthquakes. Be conscious of displaying breakable items in places where they might get bumped into.

Create a Gallery Wall for Artwork or Plates

If you collect plates or artwork, display them together in a gallery wall! This is a great way to create a focal point in a room. I’ve got posts on how to create a plate wall and tips for creating a gallery wall.

Don’t Be Afraid to Mix Vintage and Modern

Blending the old and the new is very trendy right now, and it creates a very layered and interesting home. In my home, I tend to use classic shapes and lines paired with a modern color pallet. You can definitely mix vintage pieces with your brand-new finds! I believe that if you love something, then you can make it work. So don’t try too hard to follow the rules of design on this one – instead, think about what you enjoy looking at and what looks good to your eye. You are the only one you need to please!
