If you’re a mom, I want to start out this blog post by saying that contrary to what some people may believe, you probably don’t have a lot of time on your hands. As I type this post, my one-year-old daughter is at my feet trying to figure out what I could possibly be doing besides giving her attention. As I discuss hobbies for moms, I’m not suggesting that you have a ton of time on your hands that you need to fill. But I believe that you should, as best you can, carve out time for hobbies because doing something for yourself will help you stay sane.
When can you find time for hobbies? I typically spend an hour or two after my daughter goes to bed writing blog posts and having devotions (unless I’m too tired that day and need to go right to bed – which sometimes happens!). This little slot of time spent is really helpful. On weekends, my husband helps me out so that I can take some time to myself to work on my own projects. Having something for you is healthy, so it’s worth doing what you can to find that time.
A lot of stay-at-home moms crave hobbies that are useful and will either bring in some extra income or contribute to the household in some way. Here, I’ve created a list of exciting hobbies for moms that you can try to incorporate into your life.
Since cooking is probably one of the most obvious, I decided to start out with this one. Providing home cooked meals is an easy way to know exactly what’s in the food that you’re eating, and it can be an exciting hobby. On weeknights, I like to cook easy, familiar meals that come together quickly. On weekends, I challenge myself to try out new recipes. My favorite cookbooks to get recipes from are Joanna Gaines’s Magnolia cookbooks, and I love the recipes in her magazine. I also keep a Pinterest board of recipes, and I allow my husband (who also loves to cook) to post to this board as well, so we can keep track of recipes we want to try.
Before I became a stay-at-home-mom, I wasn’t much of a baker. Only after my daughter was born did I discover my love of baking. I love trying out quick and easy recipes that I can easily pull together while watching my daughter (who rarely naps), and I also love recipes that can replace things that we would normally buy at the store. For example, I love baking muffins that I can eat for breakfast, wheat tortillas that my husband likes to use to make wraps with, and homemade granola bars. For a special treat, I enjoy baking banana bread, lemon thumbprint cookies, soft pretzels, and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. If you are interested in sourdough, consider making your own starter so you can bake sourdough treats at home.
Gardening is a great hobby for moms, especially because if you have older kids, you can keep an eye on them playing outside while you tend to the garden. I’m no expert at gardening, but I started small with an easy herb garden. This garden is all planted in a raised box that my dad built for me. I’ve had great success growing rosemary, basil, oregano, thyme, and mint. This year I added zucchini to the mix, as well as lavender and eucalyptus.
The best part for me about having an herb garden is being able to make things from the herbs. I have made mint syrup, basil pesto, oregano pesto, rosemary salt, rosemary pesto, herb butter, and plenty of meals using the herbs in my garden. Last Christmas, I gifted homemade rosemary salt to friends and family paired with some ideas for how to use it.
Next year I want to add more vegetables to my garden, and eventually I would like to add a greenhouse too. I’m not a natural green thumb, so I like to start with simple things and gradually add more and more to my repertoire each year.
I’ve always been interested in photography, and lately I’ve enjoyed this hobby as something I can do while watching my daughter, who is often the subject of my photos. I love busting out my “good camera” and taking some special photos of her when I can. I also do a lot of interior design photography for my blog, and I take photos for friends sometimes too. This is a great hobby because you can take photos of your children that you’ll treasure for years to come, and if you are skilled you can earn extra income by taking photos for others.
Running this blog is probably my favorite hobby! It blends together my love of writing, DIY projects, design, cocktails, and photography. I’m also using it as a way to keep my marketing skills sharp for when I return to work one day. Blogging is a fun way to document your life and connect with others. Whether you blog about mom life, design, DIY projects, recipes, or something else, it’s a great outlet for your thoughts and creativity.
Journaling is a wonderful hobby. It can help you remember important dates and events, funny things your kid did, milestones in your kid’s life, date nights with your spouse, and more. I used to journal my innermost thoughts and feelings, which can be great therapy. Lately I’ve avoided doing this because I want my journal to be a keepsake of special memories that my daughter can read through when she’s older, so I stick to writing about things that I don’t mind her reading about. Whether you write for posterity or you stick to keeping your journal private, journaling is a great thing to do.
Scrapbooking is a hobby that benefits the whole family because it will put your precious photos on display for years to come. To be completely honest, my scrapbooks are basic – I usually just glue the photos to pretty paper and call it a day. But you can get very detailed about scrapbooking! There are so many supplies that can enhance your scrapbooking and you can be very creative with it. If you need a creative outlet and are good at laying out photos, this might be a great activity to take up.
This is definitely not an exhaustive list of hobbies for moms that you could enjoy – just a few that I’ve tried out and find very fulfilling. What is your favorite hobby? Let me know in the comments!
