Finding Your Calling: Portrait of a Brunette Woman

Have you ever wondered how to find your calling? As Christians, all of us have a calling on our life. We were created for something more, and we often have a God-given desire to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. What’s more is that all of us have spiritual gifts and talents that God has given us. But how do we discern what our calling is? Does our calling relate to the gifts God has given us? Often, we think of our career as a calling, or we think that the things we do to serve at church are our calling. But I believe it goes deeper than that.

How to Find Your Calling: Our Universal Calling as Believers

As believers, there is a universal calling that God places on all of our lives. I believe this can be explained in three parts.

Train Your Family in the Ways of the Lord

If you are married or have children, your calling to raise a family should come first. It’s more important than serving at church and leading others to Christ (though these things are important).

You will never have more influence over anyone than you do over your family. Raising children that love the Lord can be world changing! Having a strong relationship with your spouse can help the two of you be more effective in ministry.

No matter what other responsibilities you take on, always put your family first. Someone else can go on that missions trip, but no one else can care for your spouse and children the way that you can.

Lead Others to Christ

An important calling on the life of every believer is to lead others around them to Christ. We can do this in so many ways, which will be discussed later in this post. But caring for the eternal wellbeing of others is so important, and the effects of our labor last forever.

Encourage and Support Fellow Believers

Another important aspect of our calling is to offer support and encouragement to other believers. When we build each other up and love each other well, this can have the effect of seeing unbelievers be led to Christ. It will make the body of Christ healthier and more effective.

How to Find Your Calling: Using Our Spiritual Gifts and Talents

So how do our gifts and talents fit into our calling? I believe that we should seek ways to use our gifts and abilities to forward the mission of Christ. This is where the calling will look different for each individual.

It could mean using your talent for writing to share blog posts to encourage believers. Or it could mean opening your home to unbelievers and showing them the kindness of Christ through homemade meals and a beautiful environment. It could mean using your gift of speaking to share the gospel with others in an engaging and authentic way. Perhaps it means summoning the courage to share your testimony with a friend who needs to hear it. It could mean cooking a meal for a family in need, or sewing clothes to bless a friend. Maybe it could mean selling your handmade items on Etsy and including notes of encouragement to the recipient. It could mean sharing the gospel with coworkers at that job that you don’t quite love being at.

I think God wants us to get creative in how we use our abilities to forward our calling as believers. There are truly endless possibilities, and when we take this seriously we are able to really glorify God in everything we do.

The Difference Between Spiritual Gifts and Talents

In the post I’ve mentioned spiritual gifts and talents as two separate things. I wanted to take a moment to explain what these things are. Spiritual gifts are gifts mentioned in the Bible that come from the Holy Spirit dwelling in the believer. These supernatural gifts are meant to aid in evangelism and encourage and edify the church. You can read more about spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:1-11.

Talents are any ability that you have been given. They could be used to further God’s kingdom, but they could be applied to other uses as well. They are not innately spiritual and you don’t need the Holy Spirit working in you in order to access them.
