When I became a mother, something that often fell to the wayside was my quiet time with God. Making time for myself became challenging, especially during the newborn phase when I was very overwhelmed and tired. As time has passed, I’ve learned a lot! I’ve picked up some tips and tricks for how to spend time with God as a mom.
Here are some of the ways you can keep your connection with God going with kids. I hope you find some advice that works for you!
Many moms swear by waking up before their kids to read scripture, pray, and also accomplish things around the house. As a night owl, I usually choose to stay up late instead. If your child naps consistently (mine doesn’t!), you could have that time during their nap.
If you can’t find alone time to read the Bible, try reading Bible stories to your children. This will benefit both of you, and you can meditate on those stories while watching or playing with your kids.
While I’m taking my daughter for a walk in her stroller, this is a great time to pray or meditate. When the weather permits, we will walk for almost an hour in silence, which allows me time to pray and meditate on different things. If you have multiple children or older children, your walks may not be quiet like this, but perhaps your quiet time is when you have your kids sit in their rooms for a bit in the afternoon.
Sometimes, I start saying my prayers out loud while I’m with my daughter. I especially like to do this when I’m praying for her. This is a good way to demonstrate prayer for your children to see. It sets an example for them and also can show them that you care for them.
A good friend gifted me a book of short devotions for moms, and I have loved using it. I don’t quite get around to it every day, as I would like to. But I do use it regularly, and I like that it’s a quick and easy read.
If you’re struggling with your quiet time with God as a mother, it’s important to remember that you aren’t alone. It’s also important to go easy on yourself. Your time with God might not look the same as it did prior to kids, and that’s okay. Embrace this new season of life and find new and simple ways to connect with God throughout your day.
