The Ministry of Motherhood: Little Girl Sitting in Wingback Chair

The ministry of motherhood often means busy days, filled with cuddling, crying, baking, tantrums, cleaning, toys, and overstimulation. If you’re a mom, you know that your job comes with some serious highs and lows. There are moments that are just overflowing with beauty and joy, and moments when you feel frazzled and overwhelmed.

In these moments, you may struggle to see the true value in what you are doing. If you’re a stay-at-home mama, you may miss the fulfillment that came from having a job. If you’re a working mama, you may worry about getting enough time with your kids. When you are in the thick of things, you may wonder – does all this labor really mean anything?

I have chosen to be a stay-at-home mom, and I feel better mentally when I’m accomplishing things throughout my day. I meal plan, I go grocery shopping, I bake, I cook dinner, and I work on this blog. My daughter usually entertains herself well, and I’m able to work through my to do list while caring for her. But sometimes she stops me in the middle of my busy.

“Hi mama!” she will say. And she’ll hug my leg tight and not let go.

Or she’ll say, “Book!” and crawl into my lap with her board book of choice.

In these moments, I have to let go of my to do list and be the mama my daughter needs me to be. Sometimes it’s easy to give her attention, but at times it’s hard to pull away from my unfinished work. As someone who finds their value in their accomplishments, I have to learn a new rhythm. I need to accept that the ministry of motherhood is what God has for me in this season.

Those endless hours of playtime, of reading books, of holding little hands while walking to the park, of loading a stroller into the car, of precious hugs and sloppy kisses – they all have so much value. The investment you make into your child is more important than any influence you’ll have in the world or any achievements you will make.

Every night, I pray over my daughter before I lay her in her crib. The most important part of my prayer is this: Lord, help her to accept you as her Savior. As I live out his love for my daughter to experience, I realize that the best thing I can do in this life is raise a child who knows Jesus. It’s more important than a career, it’s more important than accolades, it’s more important than any other ministry I am a part of.

The endless days of toys and books and hugs and kisses and playgrounds and swimming lessons all have a deeper, eternal value. If only I will take a moment to remember this on the days when I’m feeling challenged, then I’ll realize that even the mundane things are so important.

As mothers, showing up for our children with the love of God is our most important task. Let’s remember this and remain focused on our ministry to our kids. The reward for doing this is eternal!
