DIY Gold Framed Art: Butterfly and Doily

Something I always like to keep an eye out for at thrift stores and yard sales is gold frames. I love the classic traditional vibe that they add to my space. I scored these two frames from different yard sales for a steal. I kept them in my decor stash for a while, but recently inspiration struck and I was able to put them to good use.

The smaller frame had no backing, so I took a piece of cardboard cut to size, some fabric, and hot glue. I used hot glue to wrap the fabric around the cardboard and then glued the fabric rectangle to the frame. I added a faux butterfly for a 3-dimensional art piece. For a finishing touch, I added a piece of velvet blue ribbon that I scored for cheap at Hobby Lobby.

The larger frame had a corkboard, which was falling apart. A look at the back revealed that this piece was originally from Ballard Designs! Not bad for a $3 score. My husband helped me out by removing the corkboard from the frame. I usually do this myself, but the staples were sturdy and required a little extra strength to remove.

One the corkboard was removed, I used hot glue to cover it with fabric, wrapping it around the back. I then found a doily that I had in my stash and placed it over the fabric covered corkboard.

I popped the board back into the frame and voila! A cool, dimensional art piece. The doily and frame are very vintage, but the colorful fabric makes this look fun and not too dated.
