Finding Rest in Jesus as a Busy Mother

By , July 30, 2025

This past weekend, my husband spent most of his time hard at work building a shed in our backyard. I am so grateful for all the labor he has poured into this project. However, his hours spent in the yard meant that I was solo parenting for most of the weekend. I love my daughter, but I typically enjoy having a little time to myself over the weekend. As a result, it’s Monday and I’m already feeling the weight of the week. I’m not refreshed as I usually am. I feel weary and emotionally drained.

Jesus Wants to Give You Rest

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30 NIV

As I sit on my couch trying to regroup while my daughter plays, these verses come to mind. They are a reminder to me that whether I’m experiencing the normal fatigue of parenthood or I’m going through a challenging time in my life, Jesus is available to help shoulder the weight of my burdens.

These verses are Jesus very words. He promises us that if we come to him, he will give us rest. He says that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. This means that he does not want us to be weighed down by our troubles. His will is for us to present our burdens to him and allow him to carry them with us.

The Challenges of Motherhood

As beautiful as motherhood is – and most days for me are such a joy – there are times when we are challenged. Our kids disobey or have tantrums. They wake up in the middle of the night and disrupt our sleep. They require so much attention that we can’t take a peaceful moment to even eat our lunch. Often, mothers find themselves feeling weary and anything but refreshed.

Take a moment in the middle of the chaos to present your situation to Jesus. Read a few short verses of scripture. Pray and ask him to help you get through the day. Remind your soul that he has promised to give you rest, and trust that you can find that rest in him.

Physical Rest is Important

And from a practical standpoint – make sure you take some physical rest. Get some help with your kids so you can take a solo walk, read a few chapters of a book, do a fun DIY project, or whatever you enjoy doing for yourself. It’s important to find that spiritual rest in Jesus, but be sure to take care of your physical needs as well.

Finding Rest in Jesus: How About You?

Are you feeling weary from motherhood? Take a few minutes with Jesus and rest in him. He will give you rest and peace!
