I love to brighten up a room with a fresh bouquet of flowers. To kick things up a notch, I often create my own floral arrangements in unique vases. Learning how to arrange flowers is a fun hobby and I love beautifying a room in this way.
Over the years I’ve created many fresh flower arrangements, and I’ve picked up some tips and tricks along the way. Follow along as I take you through the process step-by-step.
The first step of creating a floral arrangement is to choose your vase. There are so many different styles you can choose from, and different vases will create a different effect, depending on the size, shape, and width of the opening at the top.
Here are a few styles you could work with:
Think about the effect you want to achieve when selecting your vase. For a dramatic look, I gravitate toward a pedestal vase, which is what I used to create the arrangement in this post.
For your arrangement, you’ll want to select a thriller, a filler, and a spiller. The thriller is usually the flower that becomes the main focal point. The filler is a smaller floral item that fills out the bouquet and fills in the space between the main flowers. The spiller is usually greenery that is longer than the rest of the arrangement and spills out for a pretty effect.
My thriller was white hydrangeas, my filler was green berries, and my spiller was eucalyptus. I had the option of selecting red berries for more color, but I wanted this arrangement to be fresh and simple, so I stuck to a green and white color palette.
You’ll need to figure out what you are using to anchor your flowers in the vase. There are many different options for this!
For my arrangement, I chose to use scotch tape. After filling my vase with water and flower food, I taped a grid over the opening of my pedestal vase.
There are some tricks for keeping your arrangement looking good for longer.
You’ll want to cut off extra leaves on the stems of your flowers. If you leave those attached, they are going to soak up some of the water in the vase. For longevity, you want all of the water going to the flowers.
When cutting the stems to size, use sharp scissors and cut at an angle. This helps the flowers to last longer.
If your flowers don’t come with a packet of flower food, you can make your own! Just add a small amount of lemon juice, bleach, and sugar to your water. I did about a tablespoon of each. You could also give this flower food recipe a try.
If your arrangement is lasting more than a few days, keep it going by refreshing it every so often. Replace the water and add fresh flower food. You can also remove any dead or wilted bits to keep things looking fresh and pretty.
Learning how to arrange flowers is a great skill that you can put to use for a variety of occasions. Whether you’re hosting a dinner party, need an amazing host gift, or simply want to add a touch of beauty to your everyday table, a floral arrangement is always a win.
