How to Be a More Effective Homemaker

By , November 1, 2025

Have you ever wondered how to be a more effective homemaker? As a stay-at-home mama, right now I consider myself a full-time homemaker, and I am always looking for ways to improve the efficiency of our home.

Homemaking is something that takes a lot of effort and hard work. I feel like it can be spoken of negatively in today’s society. But upkeeping your home is a worthy endeavor, and it truly is a labor of love. It’s also not just the job of the wife, but rather a joint effort between two partners. Since I’m not working, I do tend to take on more tasks around the house, and I take charge of the household planning. But my husband puts in an effort too. He has chores assigned to him, and he especially helps out on weekends when he has more time.

How to Be a More Effective Homemaker: Ten Simple Tips

Even if you have a job or don’t have children, you too may consider yourself a homemaker if you are taking care of your home. You may not be doing it full-time, but you still have to take care of your house! We will explore the tasks of a homemaker and how to perform them to the best of your ability. Whether you are cooking, cleaning, taking care of children, or meal planning, each task can be done joyfully and to the best of your ability. Regardless of what “homemaking” looks like for you, here are some tips for how to get better at it.

Rise Early or Stay Up Late

Rising early is a great way to get a head start on your day. You can drink a cup of coffee, relax and reflect, and plan your day. Lately I’ve been making more of an effort to rise early, but truthfully my best time of day is nighttime after my daughter goes to bed. I’m able to have alone time and get stuff done that I was unable to accomplish during the day.

Create a Routine

This can be challenging with kids! I find that my established routines only last a few weeks at most before I change them. It’s still worth trying to have a routine, especially first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Knowing what you need to do helps keep you on track mentally and will establish something consistent for you and/or your children.

Remain Flexible and Realistic

As I mentioned, my routines often change. Recognize that your children’s needs are ever changing and don’t be rigid about your routines. Let the routines be adjusted when needed. Also, be realistic about what you can accomplish with kids. For me, this looks like selecting easier recipes for baking and for dinner. I choose simple meals and one-bowl baking recipes. I save anything complex for the weekends when my husband is present.

Look for Ways to Save Money and Resources

Part of being a good homemaker is being a good steward of your resources. I am constantly thinking of creative ways to save my family money. I buy second hand clothes and décor for our home. Sometimes I even trash pick furniture when I see something on the curb that has promise. I am always keeping an eye on what we already have, whether it’s food, fabric, or craft supplies, and thinking of ways to put it to use.

Create a Cleaning Schedule

This is something I’m planning on doing to keep our house in order (I haven’t done it yet as of writing this post). I’m going to list out all the chores and assign them to either me or my husband. Then I’ll schedule them to be completed on different days of the week, so each day has a few tasks for each of us. My husband’s bigger chores will be scheduled for weekends, when he isn’t working.

The goal with this is to keep the house more clean and tidy and make sure we aren’t skipping any chores. Also, by spreading them out throughout the week, I want something that is sustainable and not difficult to keep up with.

Create a Meal Plan and Grocery Budget

This is something we have been doing for a while now. Not only has it saved us money on groceries, but it takes the guesswork out of what to make for dinner and reduces waste.

We budget a set amount of money for groceries each week. Once a week, I sit down and plan out my weekly menu and grocery list. If I’m not sure whether I’m sticking to budget, I’ll check out the prices in the apps for my favorite grocery stores.

Carve Out Time for Yourself Daily

This is something crucial if you are a homemaker! It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks and never take a moment for yourself. You need time to devote to God, as well as time to clear your head and think, reflect, journal, or just drink a cup of coffee and relax.

Right now, I try to wake up an hour before Alexa and make my latte, read a few verses, and just sit and wake up for the day. Your time could be after your kids bedtime, during nap time, or during an established “quiet time” in the afternoon. If you are a working woman, perhaps your lunch break could bring you that peaceful time alone.

Discover Useful Hobbies

Having a hobby is a great way to occupy your time. Opt for something that benefits you or your family and that makes the hobby even better! Try baking, feeding a sourdough starter, sewing, crocheting, writing for a blog, trying new dinner recipes, or journaling. If you have the skill, you could also renovate or makeover rooms of your home. The possibilities are endless!

Be Thoughtful About Ways to Enrich Your Family’s Life

A good homemaker is always looking for ways to serve their family. Depending on your talents and what you love, this can look different for everyone. For me, it looks like baking special treats for my family, repairing my husbands torn jacket with my sewing skills, and keeping our home clean and inviting. Again, consider your own skills and don’t compare yourself to someone else. Take what you’re good at and use it to serve your family!

Connect With Other Homemakers

It can be easy as a homemaker to become isolated from others. To avoid this, schedule time to spend with others who are in the same stage of life as you – or who have been there and remember what it’s like. I love having play dates with my mama friends so our kids can play while we catch up. It’s great to find support from your community and form friendships with people who know what you’re going through.
