How to Create a Timeless Home That You’ll Love for Years

By , March 27, 2025

We’ve all been there: decorated your home in a style you thought you loved, only to grow tired of it the moment new trends hit. If you enjoy designing your home you may have wondered how to create a timeless home that won’t go out of style in two years or that you won’t get bored of looking at.

How to Create a Timeless Home: My Best Tips

Fortunately, creating a classic and timeless home is possible! Follow these principles for a home that will remain fresh and inviting for years to come.

Furnish With Antique and Vintage Pieces

One way to get a classic look in your home is to decorate with antique and vintage finds. Antiques that have stood the test of time won’t go out of style quickly. As an added bonus, older pieces are often made better, and you won’t be filling your home with the same Target décor as everyone else.

Opt for Traditional Color Schemes and Décor

The traditional design style is popular in the south, and has been a classic style for a long time. Think antique china collections, gorgeous statement lamps, and classic lines in furniture. Color palettes are typically lighter and neutral, but you can add lots of pops of colors like blue and green. This design style is popular right now and is often referred to as grandmillennial. But it’s not new…and it’s not going to disappear anytime soon!

Avoid Pieces That Are Too Trendy

If you want a style that lasts for years, stay away from things that are super trendy. Not only will they be out of style next season, but you’ll likely tire of looking at them after a while. Pick pieces that have stood the test of time. If you like you can mix in a few inexpensive, on-trend finds, but for investment pieces, opt for classic designs.

Pick Pieces You Truly Love, Rather Than What’s Currently in Style

Of all the rules for creating a timeless home, this is the most important. If you do nothing else, focus on developing your own sense of style that makes you happy. Think about shapes that make you happy and colors that you have loved for years. If you decorate with things you genuinely love looking at, rather than trends, you will love them for years to come.

Rearrange Furniture and Accessories Seasonally

Even if you nail the last tip about creating your own style, you’ll still need to keep things fresh for your eye. Seasonal decorating is a great way to do this! I rearrange and swap out accessories for Valentine’s Day, Easter, Fourth of July, fall, and Christmas. You don’t need to do the same decor as last year either. Thrift some new items and try out new ways of decorating with your existing stash. I like to take pictures every year of my seasonal decor and then look back on them for inspiration. You can also try occasionally rearranging your furniture for a fresh look.

Change Up Pillowcases, Curtains, and Accessories for a Fresh Look

Another way to refresh your space is to make small changes that give everything a fresh look. Make sure your larger investment pieces, like your sofa, are in a neutral color scheme. Add color and pattern with curtains, pillows, and accessories. You can then keep the same base but replace accessories for a whole new look!
