Thrifty Home Décor Hacks on a Budget: 8 Clever Ideas

By , July 3, 2025

When decorating my home, I’m always looking for thrifty home décor hacks on a budget. I enjoy finding clever ways that I can stretch my decorating dollars a bit further. I’ve managed to curate a beautiful home on a budget by thrifting and doing DIY projects. I like to think that I’ve picked up a helpful tip or two after many years of decorating this way!

Thrifty Home Décor Hacks on a Budget

Here I’ve put together some simple thrifty home décor hacks that can help you save money in your own home. Read on for five thrifty decorating tips!

Tip #1: Customize Secondhand Furniture

A great way to save money when decorating is to purchase your furniture secondhand. This is also great for the environment! You can strip down the existing paint or sand away the stain and then paint or stain to suit your taste. Get some inspiration with this vintage vanity makeover, where I repaired and painted a vanity that once belonged to my grandmother..

Tip #2: Cover a Thrifted Table With a Beautiful Tablecloth

This is a great way to disguise a table that isn’t very attractive or doesn’t quite fit your home’s style. I trash picked this industrial metal and wood table and covered it with a pretty tablecloth. Now it’s the perfect fit for my traditional living room.

Tip #3: Turn Mismatched Chairs Into a Matching Set

For my kitchen, I purchased two pairs of cane chairs that didn’t match each other. Then, I painted them black and upholstered them all in the same pink bohemian fabric. This makes a nice set out of chairs that don’t match. It’s the perfect way to rescue single chairs or pairs of chairs that might otherwise be discarded or overlooked.

Tip #4: Try Unmounted Canvas Prints and Thrifted Frames

Print your family photos on flat, unmounted canvas to fit into thrifted photo frames that you have selected. Cut the canvas to size and cut a piece of tempered hardboard to the same size. Use rubber cement to affix the canvas to the hardboard, and then pop into a frame. This gives you a stunning framed canvas print that costs a fraction of having a canvas mounted on wood or paying for custom framing.

Tip #5: Get Creative With Your Artwork

There are so many ways to fill your home with beautiful art without breaking the bank! Here are some tips for creating the best inexpensive art for home. These tips are both thrifty and stunning!

Tip #6: Layer a Small Rug over a Large Jute Rug

In my living room, I purchased a small colorful rug and layered it with a jute rug that my mom scored for just $1. I love the way it turned out! You can easily replicate this idea yourself. You’ll get the look of the expensive rug for a cheaper price. Plus, the layered rug look is very beautiful and bohemian. It creates a cozy, unique look.

Tip #7: Purchase Faux Florals Secondhand

Faux florals are a great item to decorate with, but they can get a little pricey. I love looking for them in the thrift store. They are so much less expensive when purchased second hand! You can give yours a good cleaning before you use them. You could even consider taking the arrangements apart and remixing them or repotting them with your own vase or flowerpot.

Tip #8: Opt for Dried Florals

Instead of fresh flowers, which only last a few days, try buying florals that can be dried out. They last longer and still bring that beautiful, natural touch to a room. My favorite dried flowers are lavender, eucalyptus, and hydrangeas. Display them by themselves or mix them together for an eclectic bouquet. You can dry them yourself (just tie a string around the stems and hang them upside down) or purchase them from Hobby Lobby or another craft store.
