If you know Jesus, you may be sleeping on a powerful weapon that can bring freedom and encouragement to others. This secret weapon can overpower Satan when he is attacking you. When all is said and done, this weapon is something that will help us overcome anything in this life.
The powerful weapon? Your Christian testimony! When we talk about God’s work in our lives, it can break strongholds and overpower the enemy’s work.
Many of us hide parts of our testimony. Perhaps we are afraid of what others will think if they knew the depth of our sin. But God is faithful to use the toughest parts of our struggle as a light to reach others.
Join me as I explore why testimonies are so powerful. Hopefully you will be encouraged to share yours with someone!
Storytelling in and of itself is a powerful tool for changing people’s beliefs. We see this truth in action in the secular realm.
In the book Influencer: The Power to Change Anything, the writers discuss the power of storytelling to change people’s opinion of a certain topic.
Presenting a persuasive argument often leads to people putting their guard up. The way to help someone see something in a new light is to tell them a story where that subject is the theme.
This is commonly done through watching shows on TV. Characters might display moral values that we do not agree with. Watching these characters that we care for live out their moral beliefs is more convincing than being involved in a debate about those beliefs.
If a fictional story has such power to change the viewpoint of an entire group of people, how much more power does a true story have? If God has worked a miracle in your life, or has changed your heart in an amazing way, the best way to reach people is to tell them the truth about what he has done.
“Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.” – Revelation 12:10-11 NIV
Our Christian testimony is so important to God. Everyone who knows him has a story to tell. They have the ability to bear witness to the truth of what God reveals about himself in the Bible.
Whether your story is simple or compelling and unique, there is someone out there who might be changed by hearing it.
The Bible talks in Revelation about how we triumph over the enemy by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. This is such a powerful statement, so let’s unpack that.
We often talk about overcoming Satan with the blood of Jesus. The are songs about this topic! But have you thought about the power of your testimony to crush the enemy?
Sharing truth about what God has done in your life can destroy the enemy’s work both in your own life and the lives of others.
We don’t need to combat Satan with our own power or with fancy words. Simply recount how God has worked in your life! Talk about what he has done, putting all of the focus on how good he is.
Satan will flee when we see how powerful our testimony is to overcome him.
There is truly a power in being honest and raw about what God has rescued us from. Sharing the gospel without talking about our own struggles can sometimes come off as preachy or condescending, even if we don’t intend it that way.
It can be easy to hide our sins and struggles. Perhaps we do this thinking that this is a better example to others than our brokenness. But nobody is perfect – so nobody is going to resonate with a presentation of perfection.
When we talk about how God’s power has been real in our lives, we will reach more people who identify with what we have been through.
This does not mean over sharing, and it does not always mean sharing your testimony to a whole lot of people. It could just be about being more open and honest in your private interactions with people who need Jesus.
I share my testimony of my struggle with mental illness online. This is not something everyone needs to do. But even in all my openness, there are still aspects of my testimony that I keep private or reserve for in-person interactions.
It’s okay to use wisdom to determine how much to share and with whom. But as much as you can, be honest and don’t hide your flaws from others. Hiding too much will dilute the power of your testimony.
I hope this post encourages you to understand the most powerful tool you have at your disposal. Think of just one person who might benefit from you being honest and open. I challenge you to share your Christian testimony with them!
Even if it doesn’t cause immediate change, it could plant a seed which God can then grow and harvest in his own time.
